Dear Lee Middle School Students and Families,
We hope that all of our students enjoy their summer vacation through a variety of relaxing activities. We also want all of our students to enjoy new adventures, travel with family, and explore the many opportunities available for continued learning. In this respect, we are starting LMS’s first Summer Reading Program. The habit of reading a good book for pleasure is a habit of mind that reaps many benefits. Research is clear that students who do not read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. Therefore, LMS is committed to helping students learn to read so that they will then read to learn.
Please review the suggested Summer Reading book list on the back of this sheet. The books listed are merely suggestions. Students are also invited to choose and select other books that interest them and meet parent approval. On the back of the reading log, there are directions for ebook access through the Follett and MyON. Students can access the ebooks using their school Chromebooks. In addition, there is a calendar attached that is full of ideas to make reading more exciting throughout the summer months. In order to receive credit for summer reading, students will need to do the following:
- Record the books that they read on the reading log.
- Complete both sides of the bookmarks provided.
- Document completed calendar activities.
All reading logs, bookmarks, and calendar activities will be returned to the student’s English Language Arts teacher at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year to be eligible for prize drawings, Timberwolf tickets, and other summer reading incentives. Our students were asked in a recent survey what incentive could we offer to encourage them to read. We received the following responses from across all the three grade levels---gift cards from Starbucks, local restaurants, Starlight Skating Rink, and Sky Zone. These are realistic and wonderful incentives to motivate our students. Parents, please consider donating one or several of these items to the school’s office to be awarded to our students for reading. We are excited about our new LMS Summer Reading Program and hope that you and your student will take advantage of these activities and books while reaping all of the benefits that reading has to offer! Please support us by encouraging your child’s participation in this activity. Happy Reading!
