Programs For Children

Accelerated ReaderIt is a computer-based program that tests students on books they have read.  Recognition and prizes are awarded every nine weeks for meeting goals.

VOTE FOR BOOKS! -  This year’s theme will be “Vote for Books”.  Children will have the opportunity in the spring to vote for their favorite picture book from the Georgia Picture Story Book Award nominees.  Voting will be in March.

Pizza Hut’s Book It Students will have the opportunity to earn free personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut for reading!

Six Hours of Reading—Six Flags and Weekly Reader promote reading by offering a free ticket to Six Flags upon the completion of six hours of recreational reading.  The program usually runs from December through January.

Book Fairs— Scholastic Book Fairs will be in October, February, and May. The proceeds from the book sales will help to pay for new books, library supplies and equipment.  We will also be having a book fair at Barnes and Noble in Newnan in December.

Read Across America Week— This is the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  Students are encouraged to learn about the author and celebrate his stories.  Read Across America Day is March 2nd.

Children’s Book Week Students and teachers display their love of reading by participating in activities daily. Students across the United States participate in this yearly tradition.  Children's Book Week will be May 12-18.

Early Bird Readers—Two days a week students may come to the media center before school starts to have a quiet reading time. More information coming soon on this new program.

Tuesday Trivia— Beginning in January, students will hear trivia questions every Tuesday on the morning announcements. They will then use research skills to find the answer and turn the answer into the media center by Friday for a chance to win a prize.

Most Valuable Readers— A boy and girl from every grade level with the largest growth in Accelerated Reader for the month will have the opportunity to eat a special lunch on the stage in the lunchroom.

Family Reading Nights— We will be planning several family reading nights throughout this school year.  This will be an opportunity for families to come and read with their children and enjoy a quiet time together.

Genre of the Month Each month students in grades 2-5 will be learning about different genres including poetry, fairy tales, tall tales, biographies, historical fiction, etc.
