Reading: Each week we have a new story. The spelling and vocabulary are included in each story. PLEASE have your child read this story to you each night to improve fluency and comprehension. Beginning in January, their reading tests that are given will NOT be read to them. They must read each question themselves and find the correct answer. Each night as you read, ask them questions about what they just read to ensure comprehension.
Spelling: Our Spelling words are one way we teach new phonics skills. You will notice that the words follow the same pattern and most of the spelling words are a variation of the current word family. For example: Word family = ap--words for the week may include cap, tap, map, etc.
To review the Spelling words we have already covered or to look ahead, you may click here for a list of the spelling words for the entire year.
Vocabulary: Words from each story presented for the entire year. These are the words I list at the top of each weeks newsletter. These words need to be easily recognized and read. They do not have to be able to spell them.
These are words that do not usually follow a phonics rule. Most often they cannot be sounded out. The students need to be able to recognize these words instantly. This will help them become fluent readers and not struggle over every word.
