Character Word for the Month: Respect

In school and in the classroom, respect for self and others is key in building the norms that support positive relationships and productive learning. In recent years, there has been widespread concern about the loss of traditional values and the lack of respect shown by young people for their elders and for one another. Acts of vandalism, violence, and hate are some of the more disturbing examples in the growing body of evidence. These are less extreme form of
disrespect among young people. Ostracizing
someone who is different, shoving past a classmate to get somewhere in a
hurry, and putting down the opinions and ideas of others are just a few of
the many common everyday form of disrespect. Many students come to school lacking even a basic sense of respect, and teachers sometimes despair at the magnitude of the task they face. Yet most students want to be treated kindly, humanely and respectfully. Here at Winston Dowdell Academy we reinforce character because Character counts.
