Endangered Animals

I've made this web page based on this Georgia Performance standard

S4L2. Students will identify factors that affect the survival or extinction of organisms such as adaptation, variation of behaviors (hibernation) and external features (camouflage and protection).

a. Identify external features of organisms that allow them to survive or reproduce better than organisms that do not have these features. (e.g. camouflage, use of hibernation, protection, etc.)

Why do people hunt these animals?

There are many endangered animals in the world. People hunt or capture endangered animals for three reasons

  • money
  • meat
  • body parts

If some animals are captured two out of three of the animals die on the trip.

Why do animals become endangered?

That's simple. There are 5 reasons. They are...

  • Pollution
  • Hunting
  • Fishing

  • Predators

  • Destruction of Habitat

An animal's main goal is to survive.

Most of these animals don't produce a lot of babies so there aren't many of that type of animal. Most  mammals have one to three babies every three years. There are many endangered animals. Here is a small list of them.

  • clownfish

  • bald eagle

  • black-footed ferret

  • loggerhead turtle

  • panda

  • spinner dolphin

  • golden-lion tamaran

  • California condor

  • humpback whales

  • manatees

          And much, much more...

How do poachers kill these animals?

One way poachers or hunters successfully kill these beautiful creatures is when they are hibernating. Hibernating is when animals find a shelter and sleep there throughout  the whole winter. Poachers can easily creep up on the animals and kill them while they're sleeping. But not all animals hibernate. Some of them migrate.

Here are the definitions of endangered, threatened, and extinct.

Endangered-To threaten with extinction.

Threatened-At risk of becoming endangered

Extinct-No longer existing or living

How many endangered animals are there?

That is a very good question. There are many endangered animals, maybe too many to count. There are thousands of endangered animals, and that's not including all the threatened and extinct animals. Some animals have a way to protect themselves. One way is camouflage. Animals that have skin, fur, or scales that blend in with their surroundings  are camouflaged. If people destroy animal's habitats the animals will not have the things they need to survive unless the animals can adapt to another habitat. Adaptation means getting used to another habitat or a place an animal lives.

Vocabulary Definition
Threatened At risk of becoming endangered
Poacher One who hunts or fishes illegally on the property of another.
Hibernate Sleeping throughout the whole winter
Camouflage Concealment by disguise or protective coloring
Endangered To threaten with extinction.
Extinct No longer existing or living

Endangered animals are very important to our economy's and our survival. If these animals are all gone we will be gone too, so it's very important that these animals survive.
