The Victorian Age

Did you know? The Victorian Age is named after Queen Victoria!

Introduction

The Victorian Age started when Queen Victoria became the Queen of England in 1837.  She reigned longer than any other monarch in British history. Time from 1837 to 1901 came to be known as the Victorian Era.

Queen Victoria

Victoria was born in Kensington Palace on May 24, 1819.  She was the child of Edward the Duke of Kent and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg. She had a strong personality which she expressed with her sense of style. In 1837 she took the throne after the death of William IV. She enjoyed hearing about political matters even though she had very little say in them. Three years after becoming Queen she married her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. They together had nine children of which five were girls and 4 were boys, Victoria, Bertie, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold, and Beatrice. After 24 years of marriage Albert died from typhoid fever at the Windsor Castle. The rest of her life she played an important role in England's history. The Victorian Era reflected her personal tastes and interests.

The Style

The style of the Victorian Age was all its own. The ladies wore dresses bigger than the state of Texas! They had magnificent details such as lace, pearls, and precious stones. Even the young girls wore large dresses! Everyone enjoyed entertaining and attending parties. The time was truly classic!
