Animals of the Jungle
By: Erin T.
Introduction
I've always been fascinated with animals ever since I was younger. I've never known much about jungle animals, so on this web page, I decided to do jungle animals. As you keep reading, you'll see all the wonderful things I've learned on my journey through the jungle animals. So please keep reading, because I think you'll like it.
Tigers
The tiger is a large carnivore from the cat family. There are five different subspecies of tigers. They are: Siberian, Sumatran, Indochinese, Bengal, and South China. Tigers are the largest species of the cat family. A male tiger is about 8 to 10 feet long, including about 3 feet for the tail. The Siberian tiger though, may be up to 13 feet long, including the tail, and weigh 650 pounds.
The tiger is an endangered species and very close to extinction. Three tiger species are extinct already, the Caspian, Javan, and Balinese tigers. The South China tiger is close to becoming extinct. One by one, all tigers may become extinct. The only ways to stop it from happening are to take care of the environment and protect tigers from poachers.

Elephants
These mammals are the largest mammals living on land. They are found in tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Elephants have large heads and bodies, thick legs, and short padded feet with toes that have hoof-like nails. Their gray skin is loose, thick, tough, and nearly hairless. Their flexible trunk almost reaches the ground. It is used to pick up food, get leaves from trees, drink or get water, or to take a bath. Elephants have a gland between their eyes and ears that produces an oily substance called musth periodically. During these periods the elephant is in an excitable, dangerous condition. This occurs more to male elephants than to female elephants.
Elephants feed on fruits, leaves, and tall grasses. They eat hundreds of pounds of food a day, and they drink up to 50 gallons a day. They travel in huge herds with up to 100 animals. Elephants walk at about 4 miles per hour, but can charge at speeds of 30 miles per hour. A rogue elephant is an old male elephant that has become violent and dangerous.

Gorillas
Gorillas, or apes, are native to the lowland and mountain forests of western and central Africa. The gorillas are the largest of the ape family. A male gorilla can grow 5 to 6 feet high, and can have an arm span up to 9 feet . Wild gorillas weigh about 450 pounds, but zoo gorillas weigh about 600 pounds or more. Gorillas normally walk on all fours. Gorillas are vegetarians, eating mostly vines, leaves, fruit, tree roots, and tree bark. Mountain gorillas though, eat wild celery, bamboo shoots, nettles, thistles, and sometimes soils and funguses. Some gorillas climb trees to find food and to build nests to sleep in. Some gorillas have been known to attack humans to protect their family. Gorillas roar and beat on their chests to scare intruders. Their main two enemies are humans and leopards. Gorillas can live for more than 40 years.
