Chimpanzees

It's a human!... It's a monkey!...IT'S A CHIMPANZEE!!!

Chimpanzees are amazing animals.  Some of the many things they are capable of are: entertaining people; learning sign language; making tools; and many more talents.  Before I tell you about that, I'll tell you about their looks, size, population, lifespan, range, habitat, food and eating habits, behavior, birth, threats, and a hyperlink to another chimpanzee website.

Looks

Chimpanzee's faces can be many colors, from a light pink to dark black.  Like humans, they have hands, thumbs, feet, and toes.

Size

Full grown, chimps are about 4 feet tall.  Males weigh between 90 and 120 pounds,  females being only 60 to 110 pounds.

Population

About 100,000 to 200,000 chimpanzees still remain in the wild.

Lifespan

The longest that a chimpanzee has lived in the wild is about 50 years, but in captivity, a chimp has lived to 60 years old.

Range

Chimps have been found in 21 African countries.

Habitat

Chimpanzees like big tropical rainforests with lots of trees. They can also be found in secondary-growth forests, bamboo forests, woodlands, swamps, and open savanna.

   Food

Chimps eat meat and plants, meaning that they are omnivores.  They eat fruits, nuts, seeds, and bugs.

Behavior

Like humans, chimpanzees live in communities.  The communities have about 50 chimps in each one.

 Birth

Most chimp mothers give birth to one baby about every 5 years in the wild.  Young chimpanzees stay with their mother for up to 10 years.

Threats

The only threats that chimpanzees have are hunting by humans, exporting to other countries, and  their habitats being destroyed.

Other Facts
  • Once, a chimpanzee in captivity learned over 500 ASL (American Sign Language) signs.

  • Chimpanzees share 99% of humans' genes- more than they share with gorillas.

  • Chimps are a lot smarter than monkeys.

  • While Jane Goodall was studying chimpanzees in an African country, she observed that they were making tools to help them with everyday tasks.  The chimps made tools out of bamboo, leaves, sticks and other materials found in their habitat.
