Ancient Aztecs

Aztecs used other culture's ideas to develop a successful civilization. They were highly capable of development in engineering, architecture, mathematics, and astronomy. Their agriculture was advanced and trade was successful.

The Aztec's organization was based on three castes: priesthood, nobility, and military. The priesthood was their religious force. The Aztecs had a large and efficient army. Prisoners of war (P.O.W) were used as human sacrifices to satisfy the gods.

When the Spaniards invaded the Aztec's empire, the emperor (Montezuma) was arrested and Cortes took control of the empire. Then the Aztecs fell to the Spaniards. Later the Spaniards killed Montezuma and conquered the Aztecs in 1521.

The Aztecs used calendars such as the one seen here. The calendars were mostly based on Mayan calendars. There are two Aztec calendars that Aztecs use today. There are twenty months in an Aztec year, with a different animal or phenomenon for each one.

Agriculture
The Aztecs harvested maize, beans, squash, tomatoes, cotton, maguey, agaves, and other main plants. The maguey juice was called pulque and was used at traditional Aztec ceremonies.
The Aztecs were known for their floating gardens. They piled mud on top of marshes and placed a wooden square or rectangular structure on top of the mud.
