Hispanic Life
By Andrea H.

Hispanic Americans, also known as Latinos, are residents of the United States who trace their ancestry to countries in the western hemisphere where the Spanish language is spoken. People of Hispanic background have lived in what is now the United States since the 17th century. In 2000 the US census counted 34.3 million Hispanic or Latino Americans.

Puerto Rico
Spain started building forts on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico because they were often attacked by pirates and English sea raiders. The Spanish also had to defend their island from attacks against warships from the Netherlands. One time, the Dutch attacked the Fortress El Morro. The battle lasted for 5 days. It didn't seem like either was going to win. And both were not counting on losing.
The Hispanic Americans didn't have much food in later times. Most of them were so poor they lived on the streets. They would sometimes go door to door asking for jobs. Although 1 cent might not sound like a lot of money people used to cook tortillas over a warm fire and sell them for 1 CENT!!!!!

Their Religion
The Hispanic's main religion is Catholic. About 90 percent of the population in the Hispanic countries are Roman Catholics. Some of the Catholic priests still give the service in Latin. ''Eastern''{semana santa} is a big religion celebration . In some cities everybody takes the whole week off and have parades representing Jesus' crucifixion.
Their Culture
Usually in the Hispanic culture the women are in charge of taking care of the household and cooking. The men are in charge of making the money and bringing it home. Hispanics are family oriented. When there is a problem in the family, everyone has to help solve the problem.
The Food
The Hispanic food usually consists of beans and grains. With a meal, sometimes they eat tortillas. Their food is usually hotter than any other food. Also, Hispanics don't go out to eat except on very special occasions. Don't get me wrong, but when they are in the house eating, the women have to cook the food!!
