Mission Statement of the School Library Media Program
Mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished:
by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats
by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas
by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of the individual students
--Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs(1988), p.1
The Media Center at Thomas Crossroads
Elementary School strives to meet the educational and recreational needs of all
our students. An open, flexible schedule is used to help achieve this goal.
Students may check out books on an "as-needed" basis so students do not have to
wait for the entire class to come at one time. Media Center procedures and
skills are taught from the time a student enters kindergarten.
Students in grades 2-5 are encouraged to participate in the Accelerated Reader
program, and receive rewards for achieving their individual goals each 9 weeks
with an 85% comprehension rate.
Students in grades 1-5 take the STAR Reading test at least twice a year to
measure their reading levels and their progress throughout the year. The STAR
Reading test is a computerized reading comprehension test given in the computer
lab in August and May. Students take individualized tests to set their
grade-equivalent reading levels, so that they know which books they can read
independently when selecting books in the Media Center. Teachers and parents
benefit from this test in that they can see progress throughout the school year.
