In 753 B.C. the building of the city started.
By 510 B.C. Rome becomes a republic.
202 B.C. the Roman power spreads to Italy.
By 310 B.C. the Romans have conquered Greece and most of Spain.
61 A.D. Boudicca rebels against the Romans.
200 A.D. Barbarians attack the Roman Empire.
235 A.D.- 285 A.D. was the worst time in Roman History, over twenty Roman Emperors are murdered.
410 A.D. Roman rule in Britain collapses.
455 A.D. people from Africa invade Italy and destroy Rome.
1453 A.D. the Empire of the East falls to the Turkish. This is the end of the Roman Empire.
Ancient Buildings
The Colosseum was the first permanent ampitheater built in Rome. It can seat 50,000 spectators.
Below the wooden floor was a complex set of rooms and passageways. It had approximately eighty entrances.
The Circus Maximus was used for mostly chariot races but was also used for occasional mock battles. It had 300,000 seats and men and women could sit together, unlike other ampitheaters of the day. The last race held there was in 549 A.D., almost a thousand years from when it was constructed.
The Forum Romanum was the economic and political center of Rome during the beginning of Rome becoming a republic. It was mostly abandoned by the 4th century.
The Catacombs of Rome are the Christian ancient underground burial places. They were used for burial, worship and as a place to hide during persecution. By the 6th century the catacombs were only used to bury martyrs.
The Pantheon was built with brick and tufa (a stone formed from volcanic dust) in 27 B.C.
Medieval Buildings
The Castel Sant' Angelo was constructed by the Emperor Hadrian in 123 A.D. to be used as a Mausoleum. Now it serves three purposes, a funeral passage of Hadrian, the defensive battlements and frescoed interiors.
The Santa Maria in Trastevere was the first church in Rome where Mass was celebrated openly. It is also believed to be the first church in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.
Modern Buildings
This monumental stairway, the Spanish Steps, consists of 138 steps. It was built in 1723 in order to link the Bourbon Spanish embassy to the Holy See. In modern times the Spanish Steps have included a small-cut flower market or a place for eating lunch.
The Trevi Fountain is the largest Barqoue fountain in Rome. It stands 85 feet and is 65 feet wide. Its' construction was finished in 1762. The sculptures were of the Roman Virgin, Trivia.
