AIR FORCE JROTC
Our goal in JROTC is to build a better student, citizen, and future leader through personal responsibility, self-discipline, leadership, and increased self-esteem.
FIRST YEAR CADETS
The first year cadets concentrate on the history of flight and air power. Famous battles and world wars are also part of the academic agenda. The classes focus on events throughout the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War that relate to Military forces, tactics, causes, and lessons learned along with tracing communications, transportation and life during each of those periods. The history of aviation is traced from early ballooning, the Wright Brothers, to modern jet fighters, focusing on the advances in aviation throughout each of the wars.
SECOND YEAR CADETS
The second year cadets go in-depth into aviation weather where they learn about weather collecting, analysis, reporting and forecasting. They learn how weather relates to aviation. They also learn about aviation physiology and how flying affects the body. A study of aerodynamics provides an understanding of how airplanes fly and how they are controlled. These cadets experience first hand what it takes to become an air navigator. The study of flight is more hands on during this second year. The cadets are given the opportunity to create their own flight plans, using actual aeronautical charts. They learn to plot points and measure headings and distance using an air plotter. They also learn how to use an air computer to compute time and fuel along their flight plans. They learn to read the airways chart and understand the instruments in the Cessna 172 cockpit and compute aircraft performance data.
THIRD YEAR CADETS
The third year cadets study the Exploration of Space and survival. Using interactive videos and computer programs these cadets are given the opportunity to explore space inside the classroom. The cadets study survival skills and have labs in the classroom that simulate a real survival situation.
FOURTH YEAR CADETS
The fourth year cadets study Geography. Using Microsoft Encarta Virtual Globe program and Encyclopedias on CD. The cadets are given the chance to discover maps and cultures of the world, and beyond. A new addition to the ROTC program this year is a careers class for ROTC Seniors. This course focuses on college life and future careers. All courses are designed to build leadership and teach management of the career corp.
We have enhanced the classroom with the use of Power Point briefing slides made on the computer and projected on the TV screen. Many interactive CD's enhance the learning of wars and actual videos show the history of flight in real time as it progressed.
ROTC also focuses on leadership education. This acquaints them with customs and courtesies of the Air Force as well as learning leadership techniques. The leadership education is taught on Thursdays.
Cadets must wear the Air Force uniform once a week on Thursdays unless otherwise directed. If a cadet misses three or more required uniform days, they will be in jeopardy of failing for the term.
JROTC takes several activity trips to enhance the classroom experience. Trips are a privilege and participation is limited. Cadets 'earn' their inclusion on these trips by academic excellence, participation in events, and by displaying a positive attitude. All trips are based on availability and are subject to change.
ROTC trips consists of the following:
- Auburn University ROTC unit visit - college-bound Seniors
- Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Alabama - 3rd year cadets
- Museum of Aviation at Robins AFB - 1st year cadets
