GEOGRAPHY
  • G - 3
  • FOREST & RAIN FOREST

Forests
  • Support  complex  ecosystem
  • Need  about  30 inches of  rain a yr
  • Half  of  original  forest  has  been  destroyed
  • Only  about  30%  of  the  land  surface  is  covered  by  forests
4
KINDS  OF  TREES
  • Categorized  by  how  often  they lose  their  leaves -
    • Deciduous - lose  leaves  during  winter  season
    • Evergreen - shed  and  replace  leaves  while  remaining  green
5
TYPES  OF  FORESTS
  • Categorized  by  how  the temperature  region  they  are  located  in  and  by  what  types  of  trees  are  found  in
    • broadleaf  deciduous  forest
    • coniferous  evergreen  forest

Tropical  Rain  Forest
  • Mainly  found  near  the  equator
    • home to  about  50%  of  all  plant  and  animal  species
    • 80 - 400 inches  of  rain  per  year
    • occur   between  the  tropic  of  Cancer  and  the  tropic  of Capricorn
13

14
Tropical Rainforest
  • The tropical rainforest is earth's most complex biome in terms of both structure and species diversity. It occurs under optimal growing conditions: abundant precipitation and year round warmth.
15
Tropical  Deciduous
  • Similar  to  rain   forest  but  occur  in  regions  where  rainfall  is  more  seasonal
16

17

18
Temperate  Deciduous
  • North  America - most trees  are  broadleaf with 2 to 3 species such as  maple, beech & ash often dominating  the  forest
  • home to flying and climbing animals - birds, squirrels, raccoons
19

20

21
Temperate  Evergreen
  • Northwest  coast  of  US
    • Oregon,  Washington
    • mild  winters -  heavy  rainfall
22

23

24
Boreal  Forests
  • Needle leaf evergreens - high  altitude  forests
  • made  up  of  spruce  and  fir -  animals include  rabbit,  wolves,  deer & moose - insects  abound  in summer
25
Value  of  Forests
  • Economic -
    • half  is  burned  as  fuel
    • the  rest  used  mostly  as  lumber
    • 200 million  tons per/yr  turned  into  pulp  for  paper
26
By  Products
  • Rubber -
  • Dyes -
  • Oils -
  • Foods  &  medicines - 40% of  drugs  come  from  plants
27
Environmental  Benefits
  • Recycle  oxygen,  nitrogen & carbon  dioxide
  • cool  area
  • anchor  topsoil
  • recycle  earth’s  water  supply -
    • slow  water  runoff
28
Destruction  of  Forests
  • Being  replaced  by cropland & pasture
  • erosion  accelerates  as  land  is cleared
  • each minute - 27 acres - size of 20 football  fields is  lost
    • size of the state of Delaware cleared /mo
  • pollution - acid  rain
  • cook food / heat homes in developing countries

29
Future
  • Better  land  use  practices
  • Education
  • Wiser planning
  • Much  could  be  lost  in  the  next  50 years
