Student-Vet Connect: Veterans' Day
Information and Veteran Newsletters
This project is a community based, intergenerational project designed to meet the needs of the students by allowing veterans of our community to actually become the “teacher” for a day. Local veterans come to school on that day, are given a table to display memorabilia and talk to the students about their service. This project has been done for several years and proven to be highly successful with students and very popular in our community because it gives students an understanding of the connections between yesterday and today; it also allows students become active participants in the learning of history. This project also allows students to ask the questions they are interested in and learn about the perspectives of individuals who might not otherwise appear in the historical record, which provides the “historical actors” an opportunity to tell their own stories in their own words. Who better to teach our children what it REALLY means to be an American or why history is REALLY relevant to their lives than the people who participated in it?
Over the years this event has been one that is anticipated and enjoyed by the students and community alike. Coverage has been provided by the Newnan Times-Herald as well as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The school system has broadcast the event on local cable channels. Teachers and representatives from schools inside and outside of Coweta have visited to investigate the possibility of starting a program like this in their own schools.
