Our MissionCoweta Committed to Student Success

Introduction

The History and Social Studies Department at Newnan High School has a long tradition of excellence.  Staffed by sixteen dedicated teachers, most with graduate degrees in the field, Newnan High School offers varied and challenging courses to students of all ability levels.  In addition to the subjects that all Georgia students must pass, we offer numerous electives to students that would like to pursue additional coursework in our field of study.  Introduction to Law, Psychology, Sociology, Vietnam War and World War II are classes all contained in this department.   Several AP classes are offered (U.S. History, European History, Comparative Government, Human Geography, Economics) with more to come.  Test scores on the Graduation Test (GHGST) and End of Course Tests (EOCT) are excellent, and work is continually being done to improve.  The department is committed to an aggressive technology initiative that involves projectors and accompanying media, as well as wireless tablets and interactive remotes and responders. Interaction with the community through innovative events such as the State Court in Schools and Online Mock Elections have been held.  Local community leaders come into the classrooms during Civics Week each October and numerous local Veteran's are hosted for history classes at the end of each term.  We are always looking for ways to "bring our subjects to life..."

This site contains valuable information on the classes and programs offered.  A short biography of each teacher is available as well as the syllabus for each class that they teach.  Each teacher's email and class website can be located here.  Feel free to browse our testing plan or view pictures from the most recent Veteran's Day at Newnan High School.  If there is information that you need that is not available from this site, please email the Department Chair.

Thanks for your visit!

Department News

We want to thank several local organizations for awarding grants to our department to assist us with our programs.  The Coweta Community Foundation, Kroger and Coweta-Fayette EMC have all awarded grants to the NHS History and Social Studies Department in the last few months.  The Coweta Community Foundation and Kroger both awarded grants to assist us with our biannual veterans day program.  Coweta Fayette EMC awarded us a grant to assist with setting up a video-conferencing center so that our department will be able to video conference with places like Pearl Harbor and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

This department would also like to thank Chik-Fil-A and Sprayberry's BBQ for sponsoring "spirit days" at their establishments over the last few months.  On the designated evening, they donated a percentage of the sales to the History Department's Veterans' programs.  THANK YOU!!

The History and Social Studies Department is working with the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society on the Veterans' Donation Program.  Don't let you memorabilia be thrown away!  Donate it to the Historical Society where it can be used as displays in the local area as well as be used by the teachers at Newnan High School to help educate its students about the price of freedom!
