Graduated from Clayton State University with a B.S. in Social Science. Currently teaches Civics. Mr. Buck is married to Kristi and lives in Newnan . He enjoys soccer and reading in his spare time.

Syllabus- Civics
Course DescriptionCivics is a 1 semester course that is taught thematically. Students will study Civics from the concept of citizenship to how different government systems are set up and are run. The class will be taught using a variety of techniques, including small group and partner teaching, lecture, discussion, games and role-playing simulations. Class activities often include: Reading Graphs, videos about Civics, current news discussions, and skill work for the graduation test and reading time where ALL students spend time reading.
Attendance: It is important to be here to earn a passing grade. Students who are consistently absent or tardy experience more difficulty both academically and socially in high school. Tardiness will not be tolerated.
Seating Assignments: I will assign seats.
Requirements of the students Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Students will complete several projects over the course of the semester that will vary from a power point project to group projects to a research paper.
The students will maintain a 3 ring binder that will consist of the following sections: 1.) Notes 2.) Vocabulary 3.) Tests/quizzes 4.) Handouts The notebook will be checked periodically for a test grade.
Students are expected to enter class everyday with their assignments, book, notebook and all supplies prepared to work. All homework is to be ready at the beginning of class with the name, date and class period in the top right corner.
Reading and class discussions are the foundation of the class. Students will have outside reading assignments each week. Class work and homework will be assigned each week. All students are expected to actively participate in class discussions and activities.
Students will participate in problem solving by means of: 1.) Creating time lines and family trees 2.) Interpreting political cartoons 3.) Thought provoking and well researched essays that express views and opinions on a given topic 4.) In depth analysis of government structure 5.) Recognizing factors that helped in the creation of ancient and modern governments 6.) Interpret and illustrate how governments support multi-cultural populations 7.) Explain the interdependence and dependence of nations and their government 8.) Explain how governments often change the condition of human rights
Grading ScaleThe grading scale of Newnan High School is as follows: A – 90-100 B – 80-89 C – 71-79 D – 70 F – 69 or below Note: 5 or higher will be rounded up to the next whole number. Example – 69.5 is graded as a 70.
The grade breakdown is a follows: Tests – 40 % Quizzes - 20 % Mid Term - 15 % Daily Work - 10 % Final Exam - 15 % Total 100 % The final is comprehensive.
Late and Missed WorkIt is the responsibility of the STUDENT to make up any work within 3 days of returning to school. You must check with me after class for any make up assignments.
On days work is due, have the work ready at the beginning of class to turn in. Absolutely no late work will be accepted after I have taken the work up.
You are expected to be on time everyday.
Academic Dishonesty In the case of all work assigned, I expect you to do your own work. This includes homework, class work, and other individual assignments. If cheating is apparent both parties will receive a zero. Anyone caught cheating on a test will receive an automatic zero.
Classroom Rules 1.) Be on Time 2.) The use of profanity or derogatory language will not be tolerated in or near the classroom. 3.) Do not blurt out in class or do not talk unless you are called upon by the teacher 4.) Do not touch other students or their materials without permission 5.) Do not get out of your seat for ANY reason without permission. 6.) Writing or passing notes without permission is not permitted. 7.) It is not appropriate for you to comb your hair or put on make up – NO GROOMING 8.) Eating food, drinking a beverage or chewing gum is not permitted in the classroom.
Discipline The discipline procedures are followed in accordance to Coweta County Schools policy. ** If a student is assigned teacher detention, it is from 7:30-7:55 in room 200 B.
It is the ultimate responsibility of the parent or guardian to encourage the importance of proper behavior both in the classroom and at school. The misbehavior of your son/daughter will result in discipline mandated by the administration of the school. Harassment, vulgarity, violence against others, physical or verbal threats to others, violation of the school dress code and violation of any rule in the 2005-2006 Student Handbook can result to a referral to an administrator or counselor.
