Regional Tournament at Newnan High School
The Newnan High School wrestling team hosted the Region 4 AAAAA wrestling tournament in the old gym on Friday and Saturday (January 12 and 13). There were seven teams including Newnan competing. Newnan placed fifth at the tournament making them ineligible to qualify for state.
Newnan wrestled East Coweta on Friday in the first round. They lost by only a few team points.
During the second round, Newnan wrestled Hiram and was shut down in almost every weight class. Hiram went on to win the tournament.
The Newnan wrestling team got into it by beating Morrow and getting an early start.
The brackets were drawn up so that Newnan wrestled Paulding County (who went on to take second place) in the second round on Saturday. Newnan, unfortunately, lost to Paulding.
In the third round, Newnan wrestled Mundy's Mill and took an early lead.
As it came down to the final matches, Mundy's Mill made a comeback. With only three matches left, all Newnan had to do was avoid a pin in one match. However, they could not handle it and lost to Mundy's Mill by two team points.
Newnan got a bye in the next round and came out to wrestle as they faced Tri-Cities in the final round. Tri-Cities only had four wrestlers so Newnan dispatched them with no problem.
The Newnan Cougars wrestled Lovejoy on Wednesday and won as a team. Pins were recorded by Josh Rumohr, Caleb Forbus, Zach Thompson, Andy Pope, and Josh Whitley.
