Study Skills
This week's study skills include several note taking techniques that are very effective. These strategies will help you use your class notes to become an expert on lectured information.
1. Go to class prepared. Use a three-ring binder instead of a spiral bound notebook. With a three-ring binder, notes can easily be taken out to review.
2. Improve your listening skills. Start by going into your class with a positive attitude. Pay close attention, even though it is often hard; make a conscious effort to concentrate.
3. Develop a note taking method that works for you. Make your notes as brief as possible. Note any unfamiliar vocabulary you don't understand. Write on one side of the paper; this technique allows easier reviewing when studying for an exam.
4. Pay close attention to content. Knowing what and how much to write down is sometimes difficult. Some information you should always write down includes facts, explanations, or examples written by the instructor, and any information repeated or spelled out.
5. Review and edit your notes. Edit with a different colored pen to distinguish between what you wrote in class and what you've filled in later. Highlight any questions you have in your notes. This procedure will allow you to easily identify your questions to ask. Consider rewriting or typing your notes. Material that is easily read is much easier to study.
