New Fernbank Exhibit
A new exhibit opened January 20th at the Fernbank Museum of National History. This exhibit is called "Reflections of Culture: A Closer Look at Cultures Around the World."
The exhibit showcases similarities among the world's cultures as well as the way cultures express themselves. Architecture, furniture, tools, weapons, arts and crafts are all featured in the exhibit. Different styles of showing cultural backgrounds like clothing, jewelry, piercing, scarring, painting, shaping, and tattooing will all be on display.
The exhibit will be divided into sections that introduce the concept of culture. The two main reasons for the exhibition were McClatchey's, the creator of the exhibit, passion for travel and diverse people encountered along the way. The main purpose of the exhibit is to show how cultures use personal adornment that distinguishes them from the rest of the world. Groups are involved in the exhibit, showing how everyone seems to fit in certain groups or clubs.
The Belief Systems Exhibit shows examples of how cultures around the world use their beliefs to operate. Most cultures have a representation of a supernatural being that they worship. Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism are a few religions on exhibit.
The Status Exhibit area breaks down how status is decided and what one has to do to be in a certain status. Age, gender, kinship, wealth, and power are a few categories that determine social status in some cultures.
"Reflections of Culture" is included with museum admission. Tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $11 for children under 12.
