German Chancellor Pushes for European Union Constitution

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel began to push for a new EU (European Union) Constitution on Wednesday of last week. this constitution is to be the centerpiece of her campaign while germany holds the six month EU presidency.

The constitution was drafted in 2005 but took a big hit when it was rejected by France and the Netherlands. Merkel hopes to save as much of the original draft as possible. to do this, the two-thirds of EU countries that support it will meet in Spain this week to decide on a common strategy.

Germany has rejected pleas to have an open negotiation or debate on the constitution. The "Constitution Roadmap" will arrive in June, and this document will outline the final draft of the constitution.

Merkel pushes so hard for this constitution because she feels Europe is in need of change, and with the current EU rules, the EU cannot be enlarged and does not have the ability to make necessary decisions.
