French Military Rescues Hostages
France announced to the public on September 16 that their military forces had rescued two French sailors who had been held captive off of the coast of Somalia. Knowing that the coast was considered to be one of the world's most dangerous waters when it came to piracy, the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, gave the order for the rescue. It was reported that the French army had killed one Somali pirate during the mission and managed to capture six more thus freeing the French sailors who had been held for two weeks.
At a press conference on the 16th, President Sarkozy issued a warning to other pirates who might try to hold foreign vessels and crew members off Somalia's coast. He then went on to inform people what was happening in the Somali waters and reported that France would no longer tolerate situations such as this one. Soon, French officials will be discussing the problem to find what actions they need to take in the future.
Since attacks by Somalia-based pirates are affecting many other nations as well, the European Union foreign ministers have decided to establish a coordination unit to check out the region. They hope to send a naval mission to the Horn of Africa to crack down on the attacks.
