War Veterans Travel for Free in London
The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced that an annual Veteran's Day will be celebrated. This new idea is being put into effect on November 2. Johnson said that this plan would help the estimated 2,600 war veterans as well as war widows and widowers under the age of 60 living in London because people will recognize their accomplishments.
These groups of people will also get certain benefits. A free Veteran's Day event took place in Trafalgar Square located in central London on June 27th. The event included a ceremony in which senior defense representatives presented badges to the veterans. It was reported that Defense Secretary Des Browne and Mayor Johnson both attended the event.
In the new program, veterans and widows who are not eligible for a freedom pas are said to save an average of 200 pounds each a year. This idea came about when war veterans faced serious issues such as injury, illnesses, and unemployment when they returned home from battle. War widows and widowers have also suffered and are not entitled to existing travel costs. Starting in November, these groups of people will be recognized for their contributions and will be offered free travel throughout the capital yearly.
