Madras Student Athletes of the Month

Each month a Madras Student Athlete of the Month is selected by an Eagles coach to represent Madras Middle School in Coweta Game Day magazine. Coweta Game Day is a community-based publication that focuses on youth athletes in Coweta County, including county middle school and high school athletics and recreational leagues. Publisher Tom Debole has published the magazine for five years.
Debole says the magazine focuses on the student athletes themselves, more than the athletics. “We don’t just focus on the championships or big match-ups,” he said. “We focus on the kids first. Who they are as students, as community members. It’s about the person on the bench as much as anything."
Coweta County’s Game Day magazine was honored by the Georgia School Boards Association with a Beacon Award, for its exceptional work in reporting on schools and students in December of 2015. Madras Middle School appreciates the service Mr. Debole provides to the Coweta County community.

Cora and James (Basketball)

Madras is pleased to announce Student Athletes of the Month Cora and James, members of the Lady Eagles and Boys Basketball Teams.

Cora played post for the Lady Eagles Basketball Team the last two years and was also a member of the volleyball team. She hopes to play both sports in high school next year along with lacrosse. Cora gets her love of sports from her her siblings who have all played sports at the middle and high school level, and she credits her coach, Johanna Wessells, for being her role model and for constantly pushing her to be her best. Outside of school she likes being involved in the community and enjoys volunteering at Love and Buttons, a clothing closet. As a student athlete, Cora has learned to be a team player and how to work with teammates with varying interests and backgrounds. Her teachers admire her work ethic, her loving spirit, and her servant heart. Cora hopes to study nursing and to be involved in international mission work after graduating from high school.

James is a well rounded athlete and has played football (quarterback), track (100 meter), and basketball (forward) for the Eagles the last two years. He says being an athlete has helped him develop his leadership skills and has taught him the value of teamwork. James says his basketball coach, Matt Nash, has been a huge influence in his life. “He believes in me, holds me accountable and has always had my back.” Coach Nash says “James is a student athlete that everyone loves to be around; his smile and personality are infectious. On and off the court he is a leader and a lot of his peers look to him for guidance and to brighten their day. Not only is he exceling on the court, but in the classroom as well. With his athleticism, grades, competitive spirit, and passion for sports, don't be surprised if you see him on a D1 roster or in the pros one day.”

Noah (Football)

Noah is a member of the Madras Middle School football team where he played right tackle and left guard for two years. He thinks some may find it strange that he doesn’t consider himself a sports fanatic but feels he is more “on the nerdy side.” He loves creative writing, entertaining friends and other people and constantly strives to better himself. Mrs. Peterson, his science teacher, said “Noah is focused and committed to excellence as a student, is very respectful, and takes initiative to improve his own learning.” His football coaches agree. “Noah always make a point to acknowledge his coaches and teachers with a warm welcome and polite goodbye after the work day is the self-appointed, uncontested, team motivator. His ferocity on the football field is only trumped by the quality of his academic prowess.” Due to his character and commitment to the Eagles’ Core Values and his unyielding work ethic on and off the field,  Noah was unanimous choice for this month’s Student Athlete of the Month.
