Mentor Program

What is a Mentor?

A mentor is a trusted friend who is committed and dedicated to making a difference in a child’s life. A mentor creates experiences which will help the child feel valued, supported, and encouraged.

Why be a Mentor?

A student needs you! You can give a student individual attention and teach him/her to work with and communicate with a caring adult and you will receive great satisfaction. Mentoring will add to your life. You will make new friends and feel the pleasure of helping others.

To Whom are Mentors Assigned?

Children who are assigned mentors are those who seem to need a little extra something. Their parents or teachers may ask for someone to assist the child with reading or writing or they may seek someone who can help the child develop hobbies. The chosen students may simply need the extra companionship of a responsible adult.

How Much Time is Required?

A mentor is asked to see a child for only 30 minutes per week. Due to liability it is not recommended to participate in activities outside of the school setting. We ask that mentors commit to participating for a minimum of one school year, but many relationships continue for many years.

Mentor Responsibilities

A mentor accepts the child as he/she is. A mentor becomes a special friend and builds self esteem. It is important that the mentor be of good character and be able to set a good example for the student he/she is working with. The mentor and the child may spend their time each week playing an educational game, reading a book, or just talking.  As this is a school based program, religion is not something that should be discussed. However, the mentor does play an important part in teaching values. The student and the mentor set the agenda together.  All mentors are required to attend a one hour orientation session.
