Parents and community members discuss school growth and solutions at ‘Community Conversations’

Parents and Coweta citizens participated in series of  “Community Conversations” during September, to discuss future school growth in the Coweta County School System

The meetings were facilitated by the consulting group Education Planners, LLC at Coweta's six middle schools. The group has been retained by the school system to provide an overview of growth trends and work with the public and school officials to recommend facility improvements in the school system.

Parents from Coweta County's elementary, middle and high schools and interested citizens attended the sessions to learn more about current and anticipated future growth trends in Coweta schools, and to contribute ideas about how best to meet the needs of enrollment growth and facilities planning.contribute their ideas about solutions to increased growth at county schools.

At the meetings, James Wilson and Jay Dillon of Education Planners outlined several local data trends that indicate increased students enrollment growth in county schools. They noted for attendees that Coweta County’s growth is projected by the Atlanta Regional Commission to increase by nearly 100,000 residents by 2040, with attendant impact on Coweta County schools.

Attendees at the meetings discussed a number of possible approaches to meeting the needs of school growth, including new school construction, school additions, attendance districts and several innovative recommendations.

Education Planners has been tasked by the school system with developing data for school enrollment projections, current housing and population trends, school facility assessments available acreage, site plans, assessing school feeder patterns, and comparing Coweta County to similar districts and schools. The Community Conversations are intended to share findings, and to gather community input and suggestions to develop recommendations for facilities planning to the Superintendent and the Coweta County Board of Education.

Future sessions may be held in the 2017-18 school year to discuss findings and facilities plans.
