                                        General Notes

  • Parents model correct speech production of sounds in words.

  • Reinforce child each time he/she is able to correctly say sounds in words appropriately.

  • Use a tape recorder for the child to listen to speech sounds and evaluate his/her own speech.  Can he/she hear the errors?

  • During oral reading, underline difficult words and reinforce the child's attempt at saying the words.

  • Parents monitor your speaking rate.  Make sure that your speaking rate is not too fast.

  • Explore the environment with your child.  Go on fieldtrips to the grocery store, at the park, backyard, etc.  Build on new vocabulary words.  Practice targeted speech sounds.

  • When looking at an object and/or picture, allow the child to describe things.  Use color, size, shape, function, location, and quantity as descriptive words.
