History

Elm Street School is a Coweta County public elementary school, housing kindergarten through grade five, located in Newnan, Georgia, a rapidly-growing suburban community thirty miles southwest of Atlanta.  Even as the county is experiencing the emerging anonymity of a large metropolitan area, Elm Street School maintains the characteristics of a small-town neighborhood school.  Located on a quiet street in one of Newnan's most prestigious residential areas, the school is within walking distance of the Court House Square in historic downtown Newnan.  A strong sense of community pride permeates both the neighborhood and the school.  Residents view the beautifully landscaped campus as a natural complement to their well-maintained neighborhood.

The school opened in 1956 as an elementary school housing grades one through six.  In 1973, it became a primary school for kindergarten through grade three.  In 1988, the school adjusted to the kindergarten through fifth grade structure in accordance with regulations in the Georgia Quality Basic Education Act.  Pre-Kindergarten was added in 1994 but students in PreK are currently served off-campus in a cluster class at another elementary school.  Elm Street currently houses a K-1 behavior support class for all elementary schools in the school system.  Overall, the school's population is one of social and economic extremes.  Fortunately, staff members work collaboratively to meet the needs of the diverse student population while maintaining high expectations for all.  At Elm Street, Every Learner Matters!
