Sensational Sharks

Sharks are large fish that have lived on the Earth for millions of years.  They live in waters all over the world, in every ocean, and even in some rivers and lakes.

Sharks do not  have bones; their skeleton is made of cartilage, which is a tough, fibrous substance, not nearly as hard as bone.

Diet:
Different sharks have different diets, but they are meat-eaters (carnivores).

Great white sharks, mako sharks, tiger sharks, and hammerhead sharks eat fish, squid, other sharks and marine mammals.

Zebra horn sharks, angelsharks, and wobbegong sharks crush and eat shellfish (such as crabs and clams) from the ocean floor.

The whale shark, basking shark and megamouth shark are filter feeders that skim plankton and small animals from the water as they swim with their mouths open.  They have to eat great amounts of plankton and the small animals to fill themselves up.

Habitat and Shelter:
Sharks live in oceans and seas all over the world, and even in some rivers and lakes, especially in warmer waters.  Some sharks live near the surface, some live deep in the water, and others live on or near the ocean floor.  Sharks do not usually go near land, so you will not see them in Georgia unless you are in the ocean along Georgia's coast.

Predators:
Sharks have very few predators other than humans.  Groups of dolphins have been known to attack sharks.  Killer whales as well as other fish are also enemies of sharks.
