East Coweta High School continues its implementation of Reading Counts! The Scholastic program is a reading motivation and management program that helps to encourage and monitor independent reading. Scholastic Reading Counts! provides a system to match readers to books, monitor and motivate student progress, and respond to classroom needs. How does it work? Students select books from a database of titles from a wide variety of publishers, covering all genres. Students read the books at their own pace and take quizzes on the computer to verify and assess comprehension. Scholastic Reading Counts! has many components which address teacher and student needs.
Who should use the program? Reading Counts is a mandatory component of English and Freshman Focus curricula. However, many teachers in other disciplines are incorporating the program into their curriculum. The program focuses on encouraging independent reading.		What is the purpose? Included among the goals of ECHS are those related to increasing student achievement. Research and experience document that reading is a skill which enhances achievement and performance. Thus far we have noticed an increase in the number of students reading, an increase in the circulation of books from our media center, and an increase in student comprehension performance on quizzes.
