Terminology
Login To start a session on a network, usually by giving a user name and password as a means of user authentication.
Cursor A blinking line within an application indicating where newly typed text will be inserted. The cursor moves as text is typed and, in most modern editors, can be moved around within a document by the user to change the insertion point.
Icon A small picture intended to represent something else like a file, directory, or action.
Scroll Bar A narrow strip found in the side of a document or an application screen used to show and control ("scroll") which portion of a document is currently visible in a window.
Hour Glass/Busy A small graphic shaped like an hour glass to let the user know that they need to wait while an application finishes opening, closing, processing, etc.
Word Processing A program used to create, edit, format, print, save, and retrieve.
Internet The global TCP/IP network that can also be called the World Wide Web and also includes e-mail, newsgroups, and FTP systems.
Maximize Make the screen as big as possible
Network A group of computers and other peripherals that allows the sharing of files and other resources.
Folder/Directory An electronic storage place for work and other information like a folder in a drawer.
Open File A named collection of data or information.
Minimize Drops the active screen/window down to the taskbar.
Edit Make changes including additions, deletions, and or corrections to a document or project.
Hardware The physical, touchable, material parts of a computer or other system.
Software An application program or an operating system that a computer can execute.
Copyright The exclusive rights of the owner of software to make and distribute copies of their product.
Electronic Mail (e-mail) Messages passed electronically from one computer to another across the Internet.
Software piracy Unauthorized copying of software.
License agreement Specific permission to use software.
Computer manual Directions that tell the user what a particular software package does and how to use it.
File An electronic storage place for work and other information like a folder in a drawer.
Telecommunication Voice-video-data transmissions.
Multimedia Combination of any of the following: video, animation, sound, graphics, and text.
Desktop publishing Using a computer to lay out text and graphics for printing in magazines, newsletters, brochures, and other assignments.
Database Electronic collection of information that is typically files, records, and fields organized to allow the user to quickly access desired data.
Query Searching for information in a database.
Field A smaller unit of information.
Record A smaller unit of information.
Spreadsheet A worksheet of numbers, text, and formulas that is organized into rows, columns, and cells.
Cell A block or small area in a spreadsheet usually identified by a column letter and row number where information can be entered.
Column A vertical collection of cells.
Row A horizontal collection of cells.
Formula An equation or expression used to manipulate data in cells.
