Special Programs
A Reading First
School
The reading first program is designed to ensure grade-level reading proficiency
for every student we teach.
D.E.A.R. Time--Drop
Everything And Read
Every day the entire school reads for 20 minutes first thing in the morning.
Accelerated Reading
Program
Students earn points for reading books and passing a quick test over the
material. Students who earn the required number of points each 9 weeks are
invited to a pizza or ice cream party. Not only is it fun, but it offers an
incentive for reading.
Book It Program--
sponsored by Pizza Hut
Students earn coupons for a personal pan pizza when they meet grade level goals
for the month. If all students in a class meet the goals 4 out of 5 months, the
entire class receives a pizza party courtesy of Pizza Hut.
Character Education
Our school has adopted the guidelines of the West Point Character Education
Program. The goal of the program is to introduce students to basic positive
character qualities which enhance the character development in students and
reinforce character development already taking place in the home.
Areas to be presented throughout the year are: punctuality, kindness, school
pride, cooperation, courteousness, respect for others, politeness, patience,
fairness, responsibility, cleanliness, citizenship, loyalty, helpfulness,
joyfulness, compassion, thriftiness, respect for one's self, honesty,
perseverance, courage, respect for teachers, diligence, generosity, self
control, respect for the environment, dependability, sportsmanship, pride,
cheerfulness, patriotism, virtue, and respect for the creator.
S.A.F.E
This program teaches against drugs and violence and helps students make wise
choices. The S.A.F.E officers provide help and assistance to the students as
they complete each activity in the program.
Jump Rope For Heart
This program is sponsored by the American Alliance of Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance. Jump Rope for Heart's aim is to show the
benefits of regular exercise and to raise money for the American Heart
Association's research and public education programs. Sponsors pledge money for
every minute the students jump rope.
Learning Buddies
Each Kindergarten class is paired with a fourth grade class to work together on
special projects and academic skills. Classes meet twice a month. The rewards
are great for both groups.
Outdoor Classroom
Classrooms at Arnco-Sargent extend beyond our walls into a courtyard which has
been designated as a registered wildlife habitat. Students observe and research
fish in our pond, as well as spot and identify varieties of butterflies and
birds attracted to this natural area. We are grateful for the numerous uses of
this outdoor facility - another feature which makes our school unique.

Hero's
Garden
After the events of September 11,
2001 our students decided to create a Heroes' Garden to honor all of our
American heroes. Stepping stones were made. Flowers and shrubs were planted,
and a monument was donated. This garden is still a work in progress. In
October, our Fifth Grade students will be planting tulip bulbs and other flowers
to honor this year's Red Ribbon Week theme, Freedom is Drug Free - Plant the
Promise.
