Press Release
Coweta County Schools

Date: March 18, 2008

Pre-K application ends March 21;  Registration at Central Office begins March 24

Parents can still apply for limited Coweta County School System Pre-Kindergarten classes through noon on Friday, March 21, at their child’s district school.

If students are selected for placement in the limited-space classes on March 21, parents will then be asked to formally enroll their child in the Coweta County School System at the Central Registration Center, located in the school system’s Central Office at 167 Werz Industrial Drive in Newnan.

The names of students who are not selected for limited pre-K spots on Friday will be placed on a waiting list for that class.

The center has announced specific weeks for pre-K registration by school. Parents whose children are selected for registration can pick up registration packets at the central registration center prior to their school’s registration week. Parents are encouraged to call the center at 770-254-5551 to schedule an appointment for registration.

The Central Registration Center is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. pre-K registration dates for selected students are:

bullet Jefferson Parkway (serving Northside, Ruth Hill, Elm Street, Atkinson, and Jefferson Parkway pre-K students) - March 24 through March 28
bullet Arbor Springs, Arnco-Sargent, Canongate and Grantville - March 31 though April 4
bullet Eastside, Moreland, Newnan Crossroads, Poplar Road and Thomas Crossing - April 14 through April 18
bullet Welch, Western, White Oak and Willis Road - April 21 through April 25

In addition to Pre-K registration during the above dates, parents who wish to register new students for Kindergarten can do so for all elementary schools on any weekday April 1 through May 1.

The Central Registration Center is located in the back of the Werz Drive Central Office. Parking is available in the back and parents are encouraged to enter the Registration Center through the double doors at the back of the building.

The registration center will take walk-ins, but parents are encouraged to call for an appointment to decrease wait times.

More information about registration times and procedures can be found at district schools, or by calling the Registration Center at 770-254-5551. Information about new student registration and directions to the Central Office can also be found at www.cowetaschools.net/registration.

Students must be four years old on or before September 1, 2008, to be eligible for next year’s Pre-K classes. Students must be five years old on or before September 1, 2008, to be eligible for Kindergarten classes at their district school.

Unlike Kindergarten and other elementary school grades, there are a limited number of Pre-K classes in Coweta schools. If more than 20 students apply for an available Pre-K class, the school must hold a lottery drawing to determine placement in the class.

Application for the limited Pre-K spots will end at noon on Friday, March 21; lottery drawings will be held at 1 p.m. that day. Parents do not need to be present for the drawing. No enrollment documentation is required to apply for Pre-K at schools, but parents should be certain that they are applying at their correct district school. Call 770-254-2820 to inquire about which elementary school district serves a home.

Pre-K students in the Northside, Ruth Hill, Elm Street, Atkinson, and Jefferson Parkway districts will apply for slots at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School, since those schools’ Pre-K classes are located at Jefferson Parkway. All other students should apply at their district school.

To apply, parents must visit their districted school and complete a purple Coweta County Pre-K registration form for each child. The parent will cut off the registration portion of the form and place it in the lottery box each site will have.

Georgia’s four-year-old Pre-Kindergarten classes are also offered at select day care centers around Coweta County, which register students separately.
