Press Release
Coweta County Schools

Date: August 3, 2007

School starts Monday, August 6 in Coweta County

After welcoming thousands of students and parents who arrived for orientation sessions, early open houses, and early tours of the new ninth grade campuses on Thursday and Friday, Coweta County Schools are preparing for the first day of school this Monday, August 6.

Elementary schools start classes at 8:00 a.m. Parents are asked to drop their students off for school between 7:30 a.m. and 7:50 a.m.

Middle schools start classes at 8:20 a.m. Parents are asked to drop students off no later than 8:10 a.m.

High schools begin first block at 8:30 a.m. Students are expected to arrive no later than 8:15 a.m.

Coweta County School System Transportation Manager Judy Gresham has asked parents – and all motorists – to anticipate the added traffic on Coweta County roads on the first day of school. Parents are advised to leave early, if at all possible, and to anticipate longer-then-usual drop-off lines at county schools.

Gresham also asked parents and drivers to be especially aware of school buses, bus stops, and school traffic zones on the first days of school. She is asking motorists to drive with their headlights on to raise awareness of road safety on the first day of school.

All students who ride the bus on the first day of school should be ready for pick-up no later than 7:00 a.m. The school bus will pick up students at regular bus stops no earlier than that time, and will arrive at all bus stops as soon as possible during the first morning of school.

Bus route information has been issued by the transportation department for the first day of school. The routes are listed by school.

Every street served by a school bus is listed alphabetically under the elementary, middle or high school, with the a.m. and p.m. bus numbers. If parents do not see their street listed, or have other questions regarding school bus routes, they should call the school system transportation department at 770-254-2820.

School enrollment numbers will continue to grow through the month of August, and bus ridership will increase in the first few weeks of schools as many parents shift from car transportation to bus transportation. Routes and assigned buses are subject to change in the weeks following August 6, depending on enrollment growth and ridership patterns.

Students can report to bus pick-up sites used last year in their neighborhoods. If parents are unsure about pick-up sites, students should await the bus at the end of their homes’ driveway or – if a home is on a street or cul-de-sac of 2/10’s of a mile or less in length – then students should wait for the bus on the nearest street corner. If a student lives in a subdivision and the streets are longer than 2/10ths of a mile long, bus stops are 1/10th of a mile apart based on ridership. If subdivisions are undergoing heavy construction, bus service will be discontinued until the construction is complete, and parents are advised that their children should meet the bus at the entrance of the subdivision.

Because school bus ridership and student growth can be unpredictable on the first day of school, exact transportation pick-up and drop-off times cannot be anticipated on Monday, August 6. The Coweta County School System asks parents and students to be patient, and to be assured that standard pick-up and drop-off times will become clear and set as the school year progresses.

After-school programs will also continue to register Monday, beginning in the afternoons at each school site.

Students and parents arrive in large numbers Thursday evening to tour the new ninth grade campus at East Coweta High School.

Students at Northgate look over the class assignments at the new ninth grade campus, during the school’s orientation Thursday afternoon. Newnan High welcomed students to orientation on Friday afternoon.

Bus driver Cindy Thompson, right, and Sandra Lewis, of the Coweta County School System transportation department, inspect one of the county’s newest buses, which have flashing LED messages to warn motorists of upcoming bus stops. Over 200 buses have been inspected and are ready to transport students to school on Monday, August 6.
